Application Deadline

The preferred application deadline is October 15, 2010 for PhD programs starting in January 2011.
The application deadline is January 15, 2011 for MS and PhD programs starting in September 2011.
Thereafter, students are welcome to apply and be considered on a rolling admission basis.
It should be noted that most programs have no formal closing date, however some programs will fill quickly and you are advised to apply and complete your application before April 2011 to ensure facilitation of the visa application and relocation process.

Thank you for your interest in the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). We suggest you carefully review the list of requirements and prepare your application in advance of the deadline.

You should complete your bachelor/master’s degree in a KAUST-relevant field of study prior to the semester of enrollment.
Current field of study must be in a KAUST-relevant area, such as Engineering, Mathematics, or the Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences.
There is no minimum GPA requirement for admission. However, most candidates will have an average cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or equivalent in other international grading systems. The average GPA of admitted students is currently 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.
KAUST requires a minimum TOEFL score of 79 on the IBT (Internet Based Test) or 6.0 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) before an application will be considered for admission. KAUST's university code for the TOEFL exam is 4107. Only official TOEFL or IELTS scores will be accepted. TOEFL or IELTS scores for tests administered by an educational institution for admission to that particular institution are not acceptable.
A TOEFL or IELTS score is not required if the applicant is a native speaker of English (English is the primary language spoken in the home) or received a degree from a university in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand. KAUST does not require the GRE exam for admission. However, we encourage students to take the GRE general test. A high quantitative score on the GRE will enhance a student’s application Official test results should be send directly from ETS. The KAUST university code is 4139. The average score on the GRE quantitative section was 780 for admitted students in the 2010 admission.
Submit an official university transcript from every institution previously attended. We have provided downloadable file below that may be helpful in obtaining records from institutions you have previously attended. A scan of the unofficial transcript should be uploaded into the online application form and an official transcript must also be sent directly from the university in a university sealed envelope to:

Request for Academic Records

Submit a statement of purpose with your application. In this statement, describe your motivation for seeking admission to KAUST and your preparation for the program to which you are applying. Describe your research interests and study interests, as well as your plans for the future. Demonstrating an aptitude for academic study and research-leadership potential may enhance your statement of purpose.
You must have three letters of recommendation submitted on your behalf. Letters of recommendation are extremely important and should be written by professors or advisers under whom you have pursued research or taken courses in your major field of study. Recommenders should provide details about how he/she knows your work, as well as comparative statements (e.g., top 1% of class, best in past five years, etc.), and insight into research ability.

Setiap calon hanya dapat memilih salah satu Universitas dan Sekolah Tinggi yang diakui oleh Pemerintah Italia. Tidak boleh memilih Universitas asing, Sekolah Tinggi Asing, dan Pusat-pusat Studi swasta yang tidak diakui oleh Pemerintah Italia.

I. JENIS BEASISWA

a. Kursus bahasa jangka pendek

b. Program Sarjana :

- Karena sesuai dengan U.U. 249/99 penerimaan mahasiswa di program sarjana akan melalui proses saringan, disarankan agar pemohon mendaftarkan diri pada program lainnya sebagai pilihan alternatif, agar apabila tidak diterima pada satu program, kesempatan untuk mempertahankan beasiswanya tidak akan hilang.

c. Sekolah Tinggi Seni dan Musik:

- Sekolah Tinggi Seni dan Musik (akademi dan konservatori) , Sekolah Tinggi Restorasi dan Sekolah Tinggi Sinematografi.

d. Pasca Sarjana:

- Program untuk mendapatkan gelar Master tingkat I dan II (dengan jangka waktu minimum satu tahun akademik).

- Para calon penerima beasiswa untuk gelar Master akan diberitahukan mengenai biaya studi dan kemungkinan bahwa program tersebut mengharuskan mahasiswanya untuk mengikuti perkuliahan di institusi akademik yang berada di luar Italia.

e. Program S3:

- Kriteria penerimaan pada program tersebut ditentukan oleh masing-masing Universitas. Disarankan menghubungi masing-masing institusi atau mencari informasi pada situs-situs internet terkait.

f. Penelitian:

- Harus mendaftarkan diri dan mengikuti program sarjana dan/atau program pasca sarjana.

g. Spesialisasi:

- Dalam kategori kursus spesialisasi tidak termasuk jurusan kedokteran (UU 08.08.1991 n.257).

h. Kursus Bahasa dan Kebudayaan Italia untuk Dosen Bahasa Italia

- Kursus Bahasa dan Budaya Italia diperuntukan bagi dosen Indonesia yang mengajar bahasa Italia. Beasiswa untuk kursus mengenai pembelajaran dan pengajaran bahasa Italia dilaksanakan di Università per Stranieri di Perugia, Siena dan Roma Tre atau pada institusi-institusi lain yang berhak mengeluarkan sertifikat pengajaran bahasa Italia sebagai bahasa asing.

NB.

Calon penerima beasiswa diharuskan untuk memiliki surat penerimaan dari dosen atau institusi yang dipilih.

Para calon penerima beasiswa program Sarjana dan Pasca Sarjana - dimana ruang lingkup studinya mewajibkan untuk mengikuti satu bagian dari program yang dilaksanakan di tempat yang berbeda dari institusi akademik ilmu pengetahuan utama yang menerima para calon beasiswa-akan diminta agar merinci hal tersebut pada saat pendaftaran supaya Direksi Jenderal dapat mempersiapkan dalam waktu yang sesuai pengiriman perintah pembayaran di setiap loket Bendahara Provinsi yang ada di setiap wilayah.

Periode beasiswa bervariasi antara 3, 6, 9 dan 12 bulan. Periode beasiswa adalah tahun akademik 2009-2010 (1/10/2009—30/10/2010). Pembayaran beasiswa akan berlaku untuk periode Januari—September 2010. Sedangkan untuk program Master/S3 dapat diperpanjang sampai 31 Maret 2011.

II. PERSYARATAN

Syarat-syarat utama bagi calon penerima beasiswa adalah sebagai berikut:

1) Kemampuan berbahasa Italia

Kemampuan berbahasa Italia merupakan syarat utama yang harus dipenuhi oleh para calon melalui wawancara di Institut Kebudayaan Italia atau menunjukkan Sertifikat Bahasa Italia. Syarat tersebut tidak berlaku untuk program kursus bahasa Italia.

2) Ijazah

Calon penerima beasiswa harus memiliki ijazah sesuai dengan yang diminta untuk pendaftaran pada institusi akademik yang dipilih. Beberapa ketentuan mengenai hal tersebut:

- Ijazah harus diterjemahkan kedalam bahasa Italia dan disahkan oleh perwakilan Pemerintah Italia di negara tempat studi dilakukan.

- Ijazah harus disertai surat pernyataan oleh Kedutaan Besar Italia tentang nilai ijazah di negara tempat studi dilakukan.

- Untuk pendaftaran pada Program Sarjana di Universitas- universitas di Italia, calon penerima beasiswa harus memiliki Ijazah Sekolah Menengah Umum atau setara, yang di negaranya dianggap sah untuk memasuki tingkat Universitas.

- Untuk pendaftaran pada Program Spesialisasi, Pasca Sarjana dan Program Master tingkat I dan II di Universitas Italia dibutuhkan ijazah sarjana yang setara dengan ijazah Italia guna melakukan pendaftaran dan dokumen lainnya yang akan ditetapkan oleh institusi akademik yang dipilih oleh calon penerima beasiswa.

- Untuk menjadi mahasiswa pada Sekolah Tinggi Seni dan Musik dibutuhkan sertifikat/ijazah Sekolah Menengah Umum (SMU) atau setara, untuk dapat diterima pada akademi kesenian atau konservatorium.

- Untuk mengikuti kursus Bahasa dan Kebudayaan Italia dibutuhkan ijazah Sekolah Menengah Umum (SMU).

3) Batas Usia

Batas usia untuk penerima beasiswa adalah 35 tahun. Batas usia tersebut tidak berlaku untuk dosen bahasa Italia, dengan syarat dosen tersebut melakukan kegiatan mengajar bahasa Italia. Pengecualian untuk Sekolah Tinggi Sinematografi yang menuntut batas usia yang tidak melebihi 27 tahun.

Calon penerima beasiswa minimal harus berumur 18 tahun.

The University of Siena invites applications for the Graduate Program in
Economics. The University and the city offer a unique environment for
study and research in Europe.

Scholarship.

A maximum of 16 students will be admitted. The 8 most qualified
candidates will be awarded a four-year scholarship of about €10,500
($16,500) per year, after tax, for a total of about $42,000 ($67,000),
plus tuition remission. A limited number of students can take advantage
of lodging offered by the University of Siena in the Post-Graduate
College “S. Chiara” (http://www.unisi.it/santachiara/homeEn.html) sited
in the historical centre of Siena.

The Graduate Program.

The goal of the program is to train professional economists. Former
students hold positions as economists in the academia, in consulting
businesses, and in national and internationals economic institutions,
such as central banks and regulators.

The first two years of the Program are devoted to full-time courses. All
of these are taught in English, the official language of the Program.
After fundamental training in Mathematics, Microeconomics,
Macroeconomics and Econometrics, a full menu of specialized courses is
offered. Students are exposed to different theoretical and
methodological points of view, in order to be able to explore the
frontier of economics in an original way. Students are also required to
participate in research activities, such as economics seminars and
workshops. Admission to the second year is conditioned on the results of
all first year final exams. Starting from the second year, students will
develop their own research, under the supervision of a faculty member.
While working at their dissertation, students are encouraged to
undertake periods of research in foreign academic institutions. In this
case the scholarship is increased by 50%. The doctorate is awarded after
discussion of an original piece of scientific work (which can be written

Position 1
========
The research will be focused on designing small soft robots capable of
locomotion and
internal deformation, in order to squeeze through holes narrower than
the robot body.
The research will investigate the role of new materials and non-
traditional actuation in
designing and controlling such machines. The research will also
investigate control and
planning algorithms for this type of system. This project is a
collaboration between MIT,
Harvard, and iRobot. For this position we are looking for applicants
with robotics background.
Applicants with chemical engineering background can also be a good fit.
We are looking for candidates with knowledge of mechanism design
and control, demonstrated creativity, and experience with building
robots.

Position 2
========
The research will be focused on decentralized control of multi-robot
systems. We are
looking for creative candidates with strong background in control
theory, estimation theory,
and experience with implementing algorithms on hardware platforms.

The PhD Programme in Agrobiodiversity is aimed at the enhancement of human resource capacities in the use and management of genetic variation in agricultural and natural systems, in order to improve the sustainability of agricultural systems and the conservation of genetic resources for the well-being of present and future generations.

We welcome applications for a PhD CASE studentship funded by the ESRC and
DownsEd International to study "Precursors to speech and language development in
infants with Down syndrome". The 3-year studentship is available from 1st

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be
considered*:

Submission of a completed application form

Evidence of a grade of "Very Good" or GPA above 3.4 in their first
(undergraduate) degree

A strong command of English with a minimum TOFEL score of 550

* Successful applicants are expected to pass an Arabic test within
their first year of studies. Failure to do so may result in the
revocation of the scholarship.

The Werner Reichardt Centre for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) is a newly established interdisciplinary institution at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen funded by the German Excellence Initiative program.
Highly motivated and enthusiastic applicants are invited for PhD research positions in CIN to explore the molecular and cellular processes underlying senses of touch and pain.

Although mechanosensation might be the most ancient of our five senses, touch and mechanical pain remain the least understood of the vertebrate sensory transduction events both at cellular and molecular level. In order to investigate the molecular and cellular nature of mechanosensation, electrophysiology techniques, calcium imaging, cell culture techniques and immunofluorescence staining, confocal laser scanning microscopy, electron microscopy and standard techniques of molecular cell biology will be employed.

Applicants are expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary and challenging research area, and should be highly motivated. In addition, applicants with a background in neuroscience or biophysics are highly encouraged to apply.

The Erasmus Mundus External Window programme for Regional Asia, called
'EMMA', provides funding opportunities for students, researchers and
academic staff to take part in 'mobilities' between the target group
countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India,
Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, North Korea,
Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand) and the EU.
In general, the programme offers study scholarships for
above-mentioned nationals to attend courses, at Bachelor and Master
level, pursue PhDs, Post Doctoral research and to facilitate academic
staff exchange.

Science of Virtues- Research Grants

Introduction: The Arete Initiative at the University of Chicago is
pleased to announce a new $3 million research program on a New Science
of Virtues. This is a multidisciplinary research initiative that seeks
contributions from individuals and from teams of investigators working
within the humanities and the sciences. We support highly original,
scholarly projects that demonstrate promise of a distinctive
contribution to virtue research and have the potential to begin a new
field of interdisciplinary study.

Eligibility: The selection criteria by which the Council will evaluate
proposals and select the winners would focus on the ability of the
proposal to generate ground-breaking results in the study of virtues.
To ascertain the likely success of the researcher, they will also be
expected to consider the scholar's record of achievement, training
history, and the promise of long-term impact.

Amount Awarded: two-year research grants will be awarded ranging from
$50,000 to $300,000.

Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is subject to University of Sydney
indirect costs of up to 20%.

Beasiswa Riset: The Human Frontier Science Program- Research Grants

The Human Frontier Science Program- Research Grants

Introduction: The Human Frontier Science Program supports
international collaborations in basic life science research with
emphasis placed on novel, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches
to fundamental investigations. Applications are invited for grants to
support new approaches to understanding complex mechanisms of living
organisms. Preliminary results are not required but applicants are
expected to develop new lines of research distinct from their ongoing
research.

There are two types of grants: New Investigators' Grants are for teams
of scientists who are all within five years of establishing an
independent laboratory and within ten years of obtaining their PhDs.
Program Grants are for teams of scientists at all stages of their
careers, however the participation of younger scientists is especially
encouraged.

Eligibility: The principal applicant must be located in one of the
member countries (includes Australia) but co-investigators can be
located in any country.

Amount Awarded: Grants provide 3 years support for 2 – 4 member teams.
Awards are dependent on team size but can be up to US$450K per annum.

Indirect Cost Recovery: This scheme is subject to University of Sydney
indirect costs of up to 10%.

on sparse tensor approximation methods for high-dimensional transport
problems

The Seminar for Applied Mathematics of ETH Zuerich
(http://www.sam.math.ethz.ch/)offers a full PhD position in the
framework of a project on "Sparse Tensor Approximation Methods for
High-Dimensional Transport Problems".

Sparse tensor product approximations also known as sparse grids have
emerged as a powerful tool for the numerical treatment of
high-dimensional problems in areas as diverse as quantitative finance,
deterministic methods for stochastic PDEs, and data mining. The area
is still rapidly evolving and offers fascinating research
opportunities. Researchers at the Seminar for Applied Mathematics of
ETH Zuerich are among the leaders in the field.

In this project sparse tensor product approximation is to be explored
as a novel approach to kinetic equations, see
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jcp.2008.02.025 . The PhD project will
have a focus on efficient algorithms and data structures, which is
an exciting challenge in its own right. The PhD work will be jointly
supervised by Prof. C. Schwab and Prof. R. Hiptmair.

The positions is temporary and limited to 3-4 years after a three
month period of probation. The holder will be regular ETH research
staff and receive a gross salary of roughly 66,000 Swiss Francs (about
EUR 41.000, USD 55.000). The positions will involve teaching of
tutorial lectures, supervision of undergraduate students, and grading
of examinations equivalent to a total workload of about 10h/week.

Candidates must have a master or diploma degree in mathematics, a
(computational) engineering discipline, or in (computational) science.
Their education record should indicate strong interest and exceptional
skills in computer simulation as well as familiarity with important
numerical methods for the approximate solution partial differential
equations (finite elements, finite volumes, etc.). Experience with
object oriented programming in C++ is essential.

Knowledge of German is not required, but the candidates must possess
good communication skills and should be fluent in English, both oral
and in writing.

Giessen University's International Graduate Centre for the Study of
Culture
(GCSC), funded by the German federal government's Excellence
Initiative, offers
a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With
its
excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is
tailored to the
needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides,
the
Graduate Centre offers postgraduate students optimum conditions for
their
PhD-projects and a custom-made preparation for the time thereafter,
both with
regard to academic and non-academic careers.

From 01st October 2009, the GCSC offers up to 9 PhD scholarships.

PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend of approximately 1.000
Euros and are
offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of
a year.
Scholarships commence on October 1st, 2009.

Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study
programme and
the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active
involvement in at
least one GCSC graduate research group. Scholarship holders must
register as PhD
students at Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for
doctoral
students at JLU, except for an enrollment fee of approximately 200
Euros per
semester. Scholarship holders are expected to take up residency in or
near Giessen.

The GCSC encourages applications from graduate students who have or

obtain a first or upper second class honours MA -degree (or
equivalent) in one
of the GCSC's academic subjects* or in the arts/humanities, cultural

social sciences. Fluency in either English or German is required.

The main selection criteria are the candidates' academic

Ph.D. Research Assistantship to Explore the Potential of DSP for Digital Terrain Elevation
Data at the Netherlands Defense Academy and Delft University of Technology

With today's digital signal processing capabilities, it becomes possible to optimize the
performance parameters of a navigation system for a particular set of intended
applications. The Netherlands Defense Academy and the Delft University of Technology are
providing an opportunity of a Ph.D. research assistantship to explore opportunities in the
field of Terrain Reference Navigation (TRN) by using digital signal processing techniques
that were originally developed for the acquisition and tracking of GPS signals.

The goal of the research is to contribute to the creation of a design framework which can
be used to match technology and processing concepts to a particular set of navigation
system performance requirements. The focus lies on exploring the potential of various
digital signal processing concepts for matching a set of distance measurements with a
stored database of the environment.

The candidate should hold a Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer science,
applied mathematics or any other relevant study with substantial knowledge on data
processing. Research will be conducted both at the Netherlands Defense Academy and at
Delft University of Technology. Leaders of the project are established researchers in the
field of applied mathematics, geomatics and electronics.

The international PhD program of the Berlin-Brandenburg School for
Regenerative Therapies (BSRT) offers outstanding interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for students of natural sciences and
engineering who want to pursue a career in the field of Regenerative
Medicine and aim at translating their scientific discoveries into
clinical applications.

The BSRT is a collaboration between the Charité - Universitätsmedizin
Berlin, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the Freie Universität zu
Berlin, the Technische Universität, the Univeristy of Potsdam, Max
Planck and Helmholtz Institutes and other high-ranking research
institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg. This collaboration offers top
class scientific training leading to the award of a PhD degree for
students with a Master’s or equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry,
bioengineering, veterinary medicine, chemistry, engineering or physics.
The program will start in April 2009.. Students admitted to the
PhD program will be supported by stipends.

SCHOLARSHIP

The National Institute of Education, Singapore (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, is
looking for suitable candidates to apply for full-time research scholarships at NIE leading
to the Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) degree. Candidates with research interests in the
humanities, education, sciences and physical education are welcomed to apply. The
scholarship will commence in January 2009.

Criteria

· Candidates should possess a First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) Honours
degree or its equivalent, and a Master's degree in the relevant areas and the ability to
pursue research in the candidate's proposed field of advanced study.

· For international applicants, min scores required: GRE - 1180 (verbal & quantitative) ;
TOEFL - 580 (paper), 237 (computer), 80 (internet); IELTS - 6.5; Analytical Writing - 3.5;
GATE - 90%.

· Candidates should also not be on paid employment or accept paid employment or
concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, and bursary or top-up allowance
during the prescribed period of the award.

Coverage

· The award is tenable for one year in the first instance and is renewable subject to good
progress up to a maximum of 4 years.

· The monthly stipend for PhD students is S$2,000. Upon successful completion of the
Qualifying Examination and Candidature Confirmation (after 12 months), the stipend may
be increased to S$2,500, subject to good performance in research and required courses.

· Students are expected to cover all their living expenses (including food and lodging) from
this stipend.

· In addition to the monthly stipend, the award also covers the annual tuition fees (S$4,482
to S$11,200 depending on nationality) and the annual computer fees.

The offer of this award is conditional upon the scholar being issued a valid Student's Pass
by the Singapore Immigration, which is also subject to medical clearance, and maintaining
a valid Student's Pass for the entire duration of the scholar's studies for the higher degree.

We are currently offering a PhD fellowship/ postdoc position (Salary scale according to 13 TV-L) in Mathematics at the Chair of Applied Analysis of the University of Osnabrück, Germany, starting from 1st November 2008.

The employment will be based on the pool of applicants and their respective qualifications, either as a PhD fellowship (75 %) or as a postdoc-position (100%) for a period of three years.

A master degree in mathematics with outstanding grades is expected. There is the possibility for a doctorate or postdoc lecture qualification respectively.

The position is part of a joint project between the Chair of Applied Analysis, University of Osnabrück (G. Kutyniok), the Institut für Geometrie und Praktische Mathematik, RWTH Aachen (W. Dahmen), and the Seminar for Applied Mathematics, ETH Zurich (C. Schwab). A central theme of the project will be the mathematical analysis and the computer implementation of directional representation systems in adaptive discretization methods for partial differential equations.

Economics. The University and the city offer a unique environment for
study and research in Europe.

Scholarships.A maximum of 20 students will be admitted. The 10 most
qualified candidates will be awarded a four-year scholarship of about
€10,500 ($16,500) per year, after tax, for a total of about $42,000
($67,000), plus tuition remission. A limited number of students can

The Graduate Program. The goal of the program is to train professional
economists. Former students hold positions as economists in the

After fundamental training in Mathematics, Microeconomics,

Job description The project entitled `Islam and the performing arts in the Middle East and Europe: from cultural heritage to cultural citizenship` focuses on new discourses and practices in Western Europe and the Middle East in which Islam and the performing arts are creatively merged. The project consists of three interrelated projects carried out by two PhD students and one post-doc.

The project is funded by NWO. The successful applicants will become members of staff of Radboud University Nijmegen and will conduct their research within the framework of the research programme called `The Dynamics of Islamic Culture`.

The subproject `Islam and the Performing Arts in the Middle East` studies performing art productions by performers who view themselves as Muslims and their productions as pious. The subproject focuses particularly on new genres of Islamic performing art productions, the way they are connected to new waves of piety, and the reception of these new Muslim art projects by diverse publics. The project will particularly focus on Morocco and Egypt. The study will be based on interviews with the performers and various publics, fans and critics. The candidate can state a preference for certain genres of the performing arts to be studied. The candidate will also assist in organizing academic and cultural activities.

aim is to develop and apply statistical models that provide insights
into the transcriptional regulation of the cell on a molecular level.

The positions involve statistical and bioinformatic analysis of
genome wide datasets and support in experimental design. The ideal
applicant should have an appropriate university degree in computer
science, mathematics, physics, statistics or bioinformatics. Experience
in bioinformatics, statistical analysis of large datasets as well as
good programming skills (in particular in the programming language R)
are advantageous. Good communication and interpersonal skills are
essential, since we closely collaborate with excellent biological
research groups of the Gene Center.

Interacting Turbulent Flames Using DNS And Laser Diagnostics

A Research Studentship position is available on an EPSRC funded research project in the
study of interacting turbulent flames using DNS and laser diagnostics. This project
involves collaboration with Rolls-Royce Plc. and Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery
Ltd. in the UK.

The main aim of the project is to develop close understanding of interacting turbulent
premixed flames using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) methodology and laser
diagnostics. The interacting flames are one of the fundamental root cause for "noisy"
combustion, but this is still a terra incognita for modelling. The research student will be
involved in the experimental part of the project but there will be constant interaction
between the experimental and computational parts.

The Ph.D student will work closely with one of investigators and will be using state of the
art multi-scalar imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) facilities available in the
Engineering Department.

The successful candidate will have a first class degree in Mechanical/Aerospac e/Chemical

The MRC Centre for Genomics and Global Health is developing a unique PhD programme that will provide interdisciplinary training in statistical genetics, bioinformatics and population genetics, and the opportunity to apply these skills to cutting edge research on major diseases of the developing world.

Four studentships are available to start in October 2008. They will be based at Oxford University but students will be encouraged to develop collaborative research projects at the Centre's partner institutions at the MRC Laboratories in The Gambia, the KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kenya, the Wellcome Trust Programme in South-east Asia and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the UK. Each studentship covers full course fees and research costs, together with an annual stipend (currently £12,600 per annum).

Candidates from all countries are eligible to apply for the studentships. Applications are particularly encouraged from talented candidates from the regions where the Centre operates in Africa and Asia.

The funding is for 4 years. The first year of the programme will be tailored to the individual's background and will involve taught courses linked to the new Oxford doctoral training programme in Genomic Medicine. There may also be opportunities to take modules from the MSc in Applied Statistics or the MSc in Bioinformatics. During the first year students will be able to develop their research focus by working alongside the Centre's Informatics Fellows in The Gambia, Kenya, Viet Nam or Thailand.

After completing the first year's training, students will undertake a research project linked to one or more of the Centre's partner institutions. They will typically have two supervisors, at Oxford University and at the partner institution. The aim is to encourage students to work on multi-centre collaborative projects, and to use the PhD training programme to build capacity across a wider research network.

Interacting Turbulent Flames Using Dns And Laser Diagnostics

A Research Studentship position is available on an EPSRC funded research project in the study of interacting turbulent flames using DNS and laser diagnostics. This project involves collaboration with Rolls-Royce Plc. and Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd. in the UK. The main aim of the project is to develop close understanding of interacting turbulent premixed flames using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) methodology and laser diagnostics. The interacting flames are one of the fundamental root cause for "noisy" combustion, but this is still a terra incognita for modelling. The research student will be involved in the experimental part of the project but there will be constant interaction between the experimental and computational parts. The Ph.D student will work closely with one of investigators and will be using state of the art multi-scalar imaging and particle image velocimetry (PIV) facilities available in the Engineering Department.

conduct several months of empirical research in Guatemala, as one out
of
four analyzed countries (India, Uganda, Kyrgyzstan, Guatemala), and

Ph.D. student will spend 4 months at the Workshop in Political Theory
and Policy Analysis, Indiana University, USA, during Fall Semester
2008,
as part of her/his project commitment. The main research question will
be whether particular rural services, for example agricultural
extension, marketing and processing, health care, education, drinking
water and irrigation or mobility, can improve the livelihoods of the
rural poor by reinforcing their property rights and access to
resources.
Special emphasis will be given to the role of producer and consumer

agricultural economics, political sciences, general economics or
related

The aim of this research is to reformulate the mind-body problem (how do psychological phenomena relate to neurological phenomena?) as a measurement problem, by focusing on the question how we should combine physical and psychological indicators in a single measurement structure.

The research will comprise three sub-projects. In the first, different positions that have been articulated in the philosophy of mind - such as identity theory and supervenience - will be translated into different psychometric models. In the second sub-project, these models will be applied to existing datasets involving a) the relation between IQ and physical properties of the brain (e.g. brain volume), b) the relation between EEG measures of speed of processing and IQ, and c) the relation between anatomical differences in the brain and different kinds of synesthetic experience. In the third sub-project, the prospects for a reductive explanation of inter-individual differences on the basis of intra-individual processes will be evaluated according to theoretical insights taken from the philosophical literature on reduction.

This project will focus on business and climate change, with specific attention to how companies draw on their strategic and innovative capabilities in developing solutions to climate change. In recent years, interest in cleaner, more climate-friendly technologies - such as solar energy and low-emission cars - has grown very rapidly, and new products and markets are emerging. However, there is not much research that systematically investigates the drivers and implications for companies to move in such directions. The research will combine multiple methods of investigation, qualitative as well as quantitative, and also calls for skills in research liaison with host organizations and good external presentation skills.

LATAR BELAKANG

UU Nomor 20 Tahun 2003 tentang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional, dan Permen Nomor 42 Tahun 2007 tentang Sertifikasi Dosen, mewajibkan dosen harus memiliki strata pendidikan minimal satu tingkat lebih tinggi dari para mahasiswa yang diajarnya. Hal ini disebabkan karena Dosen merupakan SDM perguruan tinggi yang memiliki peran yang sangat sentral dan strategis dalam seluruh aktivitas di perguruan tinggi. Tinggi-rendahnya kualitas dosen akan sangat menentukan tinggi-rendahnya kualitas suatu perguruan tinggi.

Untuk memberikan kesempatan studi lanjut, Pemerintah menyediakan dana BPPS bagi dosen untuk melanjutkan studinya di program Pascasarjana Dalam Negeri. Namun, untuk lebih meningkatkan kualitas dosen berskala internasional, mulai tahun 2008, Direktorat Ketenagaan Ditjen Dikti sebagai unit yang mempunyai tugas dalam pembinaan, pelatihan dan pengembangan tenaga akademik, menyediakan beasiswa untuk studi lanjut S-2 dan S-3 di luar negeri.

DESKRIPSI

Program beasiswa S2/S3 Luar Negeri yang disediakan oleh Ditjen Dikti ini :
1. Merupakan beasiswa yang berasal dari APBN.
2. Bersifat terbuka untuk semua dosen tetap Perguruan Tinggi, baik PTN maupun PTS di Indonesia.
3. Lama pemberian beasiswa adalah maksimum 3 tahun untuk program S-3 dan 2 tahun untuk program S-2.
4. Komponen biaya yang dapat diberikan meliputi:
- uang kuliah (tuition fee);
- biaya hidup untuk penerima beasiswa (tidak termasuk keluarganya) ;
- tiket pesawat pergi-pulang dari dan ke bandara internasional terakhir;
- asuransi kesehatan;
- biaya buku;
- biaya kedatangan di negara lain (settling allowance);
- biaya persiapan keberangkatan (visa, cek kesehatan, paspor, fiskal);
- biaya kelebihan bagasi kepulangan;
- biaya program khusus (seminar);
- biaya penelitian atau penulisan tugas akhir;
- biaya pendaftaran ke universitas.
5. Besaran beasiswa disesuaikan dengan kondisi di negara-negara tujuan.
6. Pengalokasian beasiswa “Program Beasiswa Pascasarjana Luar Negeri” (PBPLN) Ditjen Dikti dilakukan melalui Pimpinan Perguruan Tinggi (Rektor untuk PTN, dan Pimpinan Kopertis untuk PTS) dari masing-masing calon penerima beasiswa. Untuk itu, Pimpinan PT/Kopertis menyelenggarakan kontrak kerja dengan Dirjen Dikti.
7. Jika sebagian program kegiatan studi penerima beasiswa dilakukan di Indonesia (misalnya dalam pelaksanaan penelitian), maka besaran biaya hidup selama di Indonesia akan dibayarkan menggunakan standard BPPS.
8. Untuk mempermudah proses administrasi, peserta dianjurkan untuk memulai program studi pada Semester yang dimulai pada bulan September.

PERSYARATAN CALON

Syarat melamar beasiswa:
1. Sudah memperoleh Letter of Acceptance yang masih berlaku dari Institusi dan/atau calon pembimbing dari Perguruan Tinggi luar negeri yang berkualitas (diutamakan dari Perguruan Tinggi Negara maju).
2. Mengisi Form A
3. Usia ketika melamar maksimum 50 tahun.
4. Melampirkan copy ijazah dan transkrip (IPK) S1/S2 yang telah dilegalisasi.
5. Melampirkan copy sertifikat bukti kemampuan Bahasa Inggris (TOEFL institusional 500, IELTS 6,0) atau bahasa asing lainnya sesuai dengan ketentuan dari perguruan tinggi tujuan masing-masing (yang masih berlaku).
6. Untuk pelamar beasiswa S3 melampirkan Usulan Penelitian yang telah disetujui oleh (atau paling tidak sudah dikomunikasikan dengan) calon Pembimbing di PT Luar Negeri.

a Ph.D. position (three years duration).

The actual place of work is at the GSF Research Centre (www.gsf.de) in Munich-Neuherberg. The Ph.D. thesis is incorporated into the framework of the project "Generation of synthesis gas from biomassâ€œ, which is financially supported from the German ministry of education and research (BMBF). The required task consists in the construction of a mobile measurement device based on novel photo-ionisation mass spectrometry methods for the investigation of pyrolysis of biomass such as rice and grain straw. The pyrolysis is part of a process chain for the production of synthetic fuels or chemical products based on renewable primary products in terms of a sustainable energy generation. The mass spectrometric analysis of the pyrolysis process should provide information about the mechanism of the biomass decomposition as well as basic principles for the improvement of the process in terms of optimal fuel yield.
The job advertisement is addressed to graduate physicists, chemists, chemical and mechanical engineers and comparable branches of study. PhD Studentship Health Psychology In Practice Peninsula Medical School

The Peninsula Medical School is a joint initiative between the Universities
of Plymouth and Exeter and the NHS. This is a University of Plymouth
appointment.

The Peninsula Postgraduate Health Institute works with the NHS, the
Peninsula Medical School and the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth to
offer an exciting range of PhD programmes. On successful completion the
candidate receives a joint award from the University of Exeter and the
University of Plymouth.

Health Psychology in Practice: Understanding behavioural intervention
processes for improving patient self-care in chronic illness.

As part of our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited
from suitably qualified graduates for a full-time PhD studentship in the
Peninsula Medical School's Institute of Health and Social Care Research,
working in the Institute's Primary Care Research Group. The studentship will
cover a tax-exempt stipend of £12,300 per annum and tuition fees at the home
rate for a 3-year period. Candidates from countries outside the European
Union will be liable for the difference between 'home student fees' and
'foreign student fees'.

This project aims to improve our understanding of the psychological
processes which are important in behavioural interventions for improving
patient self-care of chronic illnesses. The consequences of poor self-care
in people with chronic illnesses (e.g. medication use, lifestyle) are a
major source of NHS cost and developing NHS systems to improve the support
of patient self-care is central to current government policy. At the same
time, the science of self-care intervention development and evaluation is a
rapidly developing area in behavioural medicine, but one which still needs
strengthening with empirical evidence and methodological development
(Hardeman W et al. Health Educ Res 2005;20:676- 87. Michie S et al. Quality
and Safety in Health Care 2005;14:26-33) . The proposed studentship will be
conducted initially in the context of the piloting and trial evaluation of
an intervention for promoting better asthma self-care. This is part of an
ongoing programme of work developed by Dr Colin Greaves. The studentship
will focus initially on addressing the following objectives:

1. Identifying suitable process measures to assess the
inter-relationship between variables in a theoretical model of self-care
behaviour modification in an asthma self-care intervention.
2. Piloting the process measures framework alongside the intervention
pilot (or in a separate study).
3. Conducting qualitative research to elicit patient and practitioner
experiences of using the intervention and to gain further insights into the
processes involved.
4. Applying the process measures framework and qualitative feedback in
the planning of larger studies, including a randomised controlled trial
evaluation of the asthma self-care intervention.

The post will allow the student to develop a range of qualitative and
quantitative research skills in a growth area of behavioural science and to
gain experience in an applied research setting. This would be particularly
relevant for candidates considering a career in behavioural science
/behavioural medicine research. The student will be based in the Primary
Care Research Group. Supervision will be provided jointly by Dr Colin
Greaves (Health Psychologist and Senior Research Fellow) and Professor John
Campbell (Professor of Primary Care and General Practice) and the work will
be supported by the PMS Clinical Trials Methodology Unit. Informal enquiries

ceCube is a gigaton detector for cosmic neutrinos under construction at the geographical South Pole. After completion of the full detector, IceCube will be nearly two orders of magnitude more sensitive then current high energy neutrino detectors. The IceCube group at the Humboldt-University has openings for two PhD positions. Possible topics are connected to the research interests of the group.

1) Search for electron neutrinos and tau neutrinos with IceCube: The group is involved in the development of new methods for reconstruction and simulation of electron neutrinos and tau neutrinos. We study high-energy atmospheric neutrinos with the aim to identify a contribution due to a flux of astrophysical neutrinos.

2) Search for a neutrino signal from Supernova and Gamma-Ray Bursts: Supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursts could be significant sources of high-energy neutrinos. Besides a search for such neutrinos we are implementing automated follow-up observations using optical telescopes around the world to identify the associated
Supernovae or Gamma-Ray Bursts.

The appointment can begin as early as March 15th, 2007 and has a term of three years. There is the possibility for an extended stay at a collaborating institution (for example the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab). Candidates should hold a qualifying degree in physics. A specialization in elementary particle physics or astrophysics as well as software skills (C++, Linux) would be a benefit.

Design of Nanoporous Adsorbents for the Capture of Carbon Dioxide
Institute for Materials and Processes

Funding is available for a PhD studentship in Chemical Engineering, in
the Institute for Materials and Processes at the University of
Edinburgh. This studentship is part of an EU project, Advanced
Separation and Storage of Carbon Dioxide, which is aimed at developing
new materials for the control of carbon dioxide emissions. The project
involves nine industrial and academic partners in six EU states - the
UK, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Slovakia and Spain.

The student will work on the molecular simulation of adsorption in
nanoporous adsorbents, with the aim of identifying optimal materials
for the adsorption of carbon dioxide. Some experimental work will also
be carried out, at Edinburgh and at partner institutions.

Candidates should have a first class degree, or equivalent, in
chemical engineering.

This studentship is funded as a research associate post, starting at
£22,332 per year. The Home/EU fee for a PhD student is currently
£3,160 per year, and the fee for a student not from an EU member state
is £11,750 per year. The fee must be paid by the student. The

PhD STUDENTSHIP ON MEASURING AND COMPARING PHONETIC SIMILARITY

Intuitively, all linguists might agree that a [p] is more similar to a [b] than either is to a [s] or a [e]; but
how can we convert those intuitions into actual measurements? When speakers say that Irish and
Scottish accents are similar, for instance, what are those judgements based on, and is it possible to
replicate them computationally? There are already some systems available for making phonetic
comparisons (between accents, for instance, or in speech therapy situations where we might wish to
quantify the distance between the actual and target pronunciations) , but some of these are based on
acoustic data while others use articulatory parameters; and some involve very fine phonetic detail,
while others work on phonemic or even essentially orthographic representations. Which work better?
How could we improve them? And what else can we use such comparison systems for?

If you are interested in these questions, then you may wish to apply for our PhD studentship on
measuring and comparing phonetic similarity. You will have, or will soon be expected to obtain a
good Masters degree (or equivalent) in Linguistics, English Language, Computer Science, or a
closely related discipline. The project will focus on a review and comparison of existing methods of
phonetic similarity matching, with recommendations on the most promising approaches for
applications in language and dialect comparison and classification. However, you will be able to
choose to take a primarily linguistic, dialectological or computational approach to the topic, which will
allow you to pursue your own research interests in, for instance, historical linguistics,
psycholinguistics, or modelling applications.

You will be supervised by Prof April McMahon and Dr Simon Kirby in the department of Linguistics
and English Language at the University of Edinburgh, and will join a vibrant community of
researchers in the language sciences, including a lively research group on Language, Evolution and
Computation with special interests in computer modelling. The studentship will be held in association
with the AHRC Centre for the Evolution of Cultural Diversity at University College London (http://www.cecd.ucl.ac.uk/home/ ), and there will be funding available to allow you to travel to the Centre
and participate in the exciting interdisciplinary research being carried out there.

positions for a total of up to five years of support.

AIs and fellowship recipients receive full tuition (valued at approximately
$21,000 per year for an out-of-state student) and health insurance. Living
stipends for 2007-2008 will be at least $12, 500 for an AIship and at least
$15,000 for a fellowship. Miscellaneous additional fees run approximately

innovative workplace risk management interventions, designed to bring about

The Centre is a Centre of Excellence (CoE) under the scheme initiated by The Research Council of Norway to enable Norwegian research groups to carry on long-term, basic research to a high international standard.
The Centre deals with Quality of Service (QoS) issues in heterogeneous, multilayered networks, wireless networks included, where packet switching technology is employed. The Centre works within the following areas: new network structures, multimedia signal processing, dependability, traffic and information security as applied to multiparty communication between stationary and mobile users. The Centre presently has around 35 scientists including professors, postdocs, PhD candidates and visiting professors/scholars .

We are looking for well qualified applicants, and offer excellent terms and conditions. Candidates get ample opportunities to participate at international research conferences/ seminars.
Applicable to all scholarships: PhD candidates are normally engaged for three years, with a possible extension to 4 years with 25% assistant teaching duties at the cooperating University Departments in accordance with individual agreements. The teaching duties are primarily associated with ordinary graduate and undergraduate courses, and are normally assigned with a proportionally larger share in the first half of the period of engagement.
NTNU would like to increase the number of females in academic positions. Women are therefore especially encouraged to apply. The Public Sector employees shall as far as possible reflect the diversity in the population. Therefore, it is a personnel policy goal to obtain a balanced mix of age and gender, and to recruit persons with immigrant background. Persons with immigrant background are encouraged to apply.
Wages are negotiated individually. The PhD scholarships are placed in salary code 1017, at level 41-58 on the Norwegian State Salary Scale. This amounts to an annual gross salary of NOK 310 500 – 418 200. The student will be liable to pay personal income tax in Norway. There is a compulsory deduction of 2% for the State Pension Fund.
Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations dated 31.01.06 with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and polytechnics. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants must commit themselves to participate in an organized doctoral programme in the period of engagement. The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.

Publications and other scientific works which the applicant wants to be considered at the appraisal should be enclosed, preferably in three copies. Joint works will be considered. 1st, 2006 at the Department of Economics of the
Friedrich-Schiller- University Jena in cooperation with the Max Planck
Institute of Economics, Jena. The program is funded by the German Science
Foundation. It offers top level graduated students the opportunity to

The Research Training Group offers several scholarships for doctoral
students (duration of 2+1 years) with a background in economics and business
administration.

The Research Training Group "The Economics of Innovative Change" will
address unresolved questions and problems concerning the economic dynamics
of firms, markets, sectors and regions with an analytical focus on the
endogenous driving forces mainly understood as the activities of invention
and innovation. The variety of topics that is dealt with covers the
foundations of individual behaviour and the economic and institutional
environment, the generation of innovations together with the organizational

Australia offers scholarships for Asian students

Top students from Asian countries, including India, will be receiving funding to study in Australian Universities under a government scholarship programme worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The biggest overseas education plan funded by Canberra is expected to be one of Australia's most tangible contribution to the East Asian community, which will be discussed at this week's Asean and East Asian Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The scholarship scheme would benefit students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan, The Australian newspaper reported.

The scheme to be undertaken under the 'Federal Government Scholarship Programme,' is expected to be formally announced by Australian Prime Minister John Howard this week during his visit to Kuala Lumpur for the East Asian Summit.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said, 205,000 students from East Asian countries including India are already studying in Australia.

"I think those numbers will increase and we will have a substantial number of students studying in Australia on scholarship programmes," he said.

This scholarship programme is a new version of the Colombo plan that brought 20,000 Asian students to Australia between 1951 and 1980.

The programme will also have the provision of Australian students to study in Asia.

Stipend

To complement the ANU PhD Scholarship, School merit-based supplementary scholarships up to $18,000 per annum (tax free) are also available (see Alan Sargeson Merit-based scholarships). ). A $1,000 relocation incentive is also paid to all students moving from Australian interstate to the ACT. For the duration of the scholarship the students will receive support to attend national conferences and will be strongly encouraged and supported to attend one international conference.

New Zealand students are not required to pay full tuition fees as is required of other overseas students. They are, like Australians, included in the Australian Government’s Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS). However, they are required to pay Overseas Student Health Cover as they are not eligible for coverage under Medicare. Scholars are eligible for assistance with University accommodation. Students recruited in Australia are eligible for an establishment allowance.

Overseas students are eligible to apply for these scholarship provided that they have separate tuition fee funding. Return airfares to Canberra and a grant for the reimbursement of some removal expenses are normally paid to scholars who are recruited from overseas. If the overseas scholar is married before taking up a scholarship, travel and some removal costs may be paid for the spouse and dependent children.

Australians and New Zealanders may apply at any time throughout the year. Australian applicants who also wish to be considered for an Australian Postgraduate Award must lodge their applications by 31 October each year.

This scholarship is part of a new project investigating the acoustical and other physical effects involved in players' performance on woodwind instruments.
The project is interdisciplinary, a range of skills in science or engineering is potentially relevant and there is some possibility to adapt the project to the skills of a good applicant. The applicant should have an honours degree in Physics, Engineering or Computing Science. Some knowledge of music would be an advantage, but playing ability is not necessary.

The Music Acoustics Laboratory at UNSW is one of the world's leading labs in this field, regularly publishing in top journals (JASA, Nature, Acustica etc) and its staff and graduate students have won a number of awards and prizes.

Funded by part of an ARC Discovery grant, the Scholarship is $20k per year, and is not taxable. PhD students in the School may simultaneously accept Postgraduate Assistantships, which provide additional guaranteed income of up to $10k per year, in return for agreed teaching duties. The scholarship does not cover tuition fees. Australian and New Zealand students do not pay tuition fees.

The university campus is located in the East of Sydney, close to Coogee Beach.

Scholarship Description
Streamlining cross-organisational processes based on service-oriented solutions is seen as a promising way of improving organisational performance. However, an overarching methodology for enabling large service-oriented solutions, also known as service ecosystems, is still missing. This project seeks to provide a framework and relevant methods for consistent definition of services, design of user-centred service repositories, corresponding incentive and accountability structures, and efficient service discovery mechanisms in service ecosystems. The project will result in the design, test and prototyping of a cross-agency service ecosystem within Queensland Government.

The Indonesian province of West Papua represents one of the few remaining tropical rainforest wilderness areas of the world, yet it is threatened by unsustainable resource extraction practices. This Scholarship is for research in the areas of Sustainable Forest Eco-tourism Development, Local Livelihoods and Community Informatics in West Papua.

The PhD project will address the question of whether community-based eco-tourism in specific Papuan villages can provide a sustainable alternative to destructive resource extraction industries, and investigate the role that information and communications technologies (ICT) can play in realising this alternative.

The project will need to consider the nature of potential tourism products, and barriers to their development and distribution in the region.

extendable for a third year. Doctoral degrees may be obtained in
computational linguistics, phonetics, engineering or informatics, from
Saarland University. The official language of the programme is English,
and dissertations may be written in English or German.

The nature of the cooperation includes:

* Joint supervision of dissertations by lecturers from Saarbruecken and
the US

* A six to twelve months research stay at Brown or Johns Hopkins
University

* An intensive research exchange programme between all four
participating sites (including, for example, an annual two-week forum
attended by PhD students and lecturers from all four centres)

The scholarship currently provides EURO 1468 per month (approximately
USD 1835). Additional compensation includes family allowance (where
applicable), travel funding, support for carrying out experiments, and
an additional monthly allowance for the duration of the stay in the US.

Applicants should hold a strong university degree equivalent to the
German Diplom or Magister (e.g. Master's level), in a relevant
discipline. Applicants should not be more than 28 years of age. Female
scientists and international students are particularly encouraged to
apply.

Applications should include:

* a curriculum vitae indicating degrees obtained, disciplines covered
(e.g. list of courses or transcript), publications, and other relevant
experience

* a sample of written work (e.g. research paper, or dissertation,
preferably in English)

* copies of high school and university
certificates

* two references (to be sent directly to the PIRE office)

* an informal cover letter specifying interests, previous knowledge and
activities in any of the relevant research areas. Where possible it
should include a brief outline of research interests to be pursued
within the scholarship.

Call for candidates for Eiffel scholarships and Eiffel PhD scholarships for 2007-2008

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is launching its call for candidates for Eiffel scholarships and Eiffel PhD scholarships for 2007-2008.

Eiffel scholarships are awarded to foreign students for preparation in France of a master’s degree in one of these areas: engineering, economics-management, law-political science.

Applications from students from Asia, Latin America, the new European Union member states and, more generally, from countries with strong scientific and academic potential are encouraged.

Under the program, about 400 scholarships are awarded each year. Students receive a monthly allowance of 1,000 euros along with health coverage, round-trip travel expenses, medical expenses plus access to cultural activities. Since 1999 when the program was launched, over 3,000 students have been selected.

In addition since 2005, Eiffel Doctorat scholarships, providing a monthly allowance of 1,400 euros, complement the program by offering about 80 “mobility” scholarships for 10 months to doctoral students in the context of joint-tutorship or joint-direction of their theses.

A PhD-scholarship is available for a candidate with a background in structural/molecular biology. The project includes characterization of enzymes and regulator proteins involved in the Quorum sensing system of a fish pathogen. The PhD-student will be involved in recombinant protein production, characterization of the proteins by standard biochemical and biophysical methods, and crystallization and structure determination using X-ray crystallographic techniques. The candidate should have some experience in one or more of the techniques; recombinant _expression_ of proteins and purification, protein crystallography, or enzyme kinetics studies.

The goals of the research project are to develop the scientific tools and fabrication technologies needed for realizing semiconductor lasers in arrays of nano-scale optical resonators.

In connection with the launching of a research project financed by the Danish Research Council for Technology and Production a PhD scholarship is available. The project is a collaboration between COM•DTU at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Alight Technologies A/S.

The goals of the research project are to develop the scientific tools and fabrication technologies needed for realizing semiconductor lasers in arrays of nano-scale optical resonators. The small volume of each resonator and the arrayed structure enables dramatic improvements in overall laser performance, such as very high modulation rate, high output power and improved energy efficiency.

The successful applicant will perform optical design, work with device fabrication in DTU's cleanroom facilities and characterize components in the optical laboratories of the nanophotonics division at COM•DTU. In addition, Alight Technologies A/S will provide access to their characterization setup and consultancy in aspects of design and process development. The project will entail both fundamental scientific investigations as well as device development with an eye on commercial exploitation.

Candidates for the position should have a master’s degree in engineering or physics and have a good experimental and/or theoretical background in optoelectronics, optics or solid-state materials physics.

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the successful candidates will be enrolled as PhD students at the Technical University of Denmark.

The salary and further terms of employment (3 years) are consistent with the general terms for PhD students at DTU.
