Beasiswa S3: PhD scholarships of the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds
Conditions
On accepting the PhD scholarship, the grant-holder agrees to the following conditions:
The grant expires if not taken up within six months. It is intended to cover the living expenses of the recipient, who is therefore expected not to receive regular personal income from other research-sponsoring institutions or research institutes while receiving a Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds grant. Any labour or other contracts yielding a regular income must be cancelled.
The official notification indicates the grant sum awarded. This is based on the details given in the application. The scholar is obliged to notify the Foundation of any changes in his personal or financial circumstances (change of marital status, income of spouse, etc.) so that the Foundation can review the size of the grant. The money is paid into the scholar's personal bank account by the middle of the month.
Irrespective of the scholar's age the basic monthly grant amounts to EUR 1,400. In Switzerland, in the USA and the United Kingdom EUR 500 are added as a compensation for purchasing power. Depending on the cost of living, all other countries are grouped into one of these two categories. All scholars are paid an additional flat-rate sum of EUR 100 per month to cover minor project-related costs (books, travelling expenses, etc.) and premiums for personal insurance. A spouse allowance may be added; child allowance is not paid. Tuition and/or bench fees are not taken over.
Scholarships awarded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds do not constitute any form of employment. In the Federal Republic of Germany and in countries which have concluded a double-taxation agreement with the Federal Republic of Germany, scholarships are exempt from tax under Article 3, No. 44 of the German Tax Law. A grant is not considered to be remuneration as defined by Article 14 of the German Social Law IV and is therefore not liable to social insurance. Provision of laws governing formation of capital, saving premiums and residential building premiums do not apply.
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds does not provide any kind of insurance for its grant-holders. They must insure themselves and their families against any possible costs and consequences incurred by illness, accident, personal liability, etc. In the event of illness, the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds would continue payments for two months, following which, assistance would cease. Upon recovery, the scholarship may be extended by the period of absence due to the illness.
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds does not intervene in the work of scholars, who are accordingly bound to make proper use of the allocated funds. Each scholar is committed to devote his whole energy to his particular PhD project. In the laboratory, scholars should only be assigned tasks directly connected to their PhD projects.
If a scholar changes the topic or the group, he must inform the Foundation without delay. If the project is successfully completed before the award expires, payment will be discontinued.
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds expects every scholar to supply reprints of any publication prepared with the Foundation's assistance. Furthermore, scholars must present a final report for publication in B.I.F. FUTURA, no later than two months after completion of the PhD project.
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds reserves the right to reclaim any surplus payment or money paid in error. Furthermore, the Foundation may cancel the grant and demand repayment if the scholarship was obtained under false pretences, if not used for its intended purpose, if the obligation to submit the final report is not fulfilled, or for any other sound reason.
Extensions
PhD scholarships of the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds are awarded for 24 months and can be extended once for up to 12 months. However, if the scholar began work on his/her project before taking up the scholarship, that period will be deducted from the maximally possible extension period of 12 months.
Applications for extension are considered by the Board of Trustees. These may be submitted to the secretariat by 15 January, 15 May and 15 September of each year. The application should be submitted as .doc or .pdf file. It should include information on the results obtained so far and on the work still pending completion. Publications and manuscripts submitted for publication, as well as a letter of recommendation from the scientific supervisor, must be attached.
