National Science Scholarships
PhD Scholarship
Purpose
This scholarship offers support for PhD training in various Science, Engineering and Biomedical Science disciplines. In return, scholars will return to make their mark on the R&D landscape in Singapore.
Eligibility
-Candidates with a First Class Honours degree or a GPA of 3.8 and above from US universities or a CAP of 4.5 and above from local universities in relevant disciplines will be considered
-Applicants should have gained or be in the process of gaining admission into a top overseas university for Science and Engineering or Biomedical Sciences
-Preference will be given to those with a strong interest in a research career
-Graduate Record Exam (GRE) tests with a minimum score of 1400 for verbal + quantitative and 4.5 for analytical writing**
-Successful candidates are required to undergo a one-year research attachment at an A*STAR research institute, prior to their PhD studies. Exceptions may be granted but will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
-Open to Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents and ASEAN Nationals*
* Successful candidates who are not Singaporeans are required to take up Singapore Citizenship.
** All candidates are encouraged to apply with their GRE test scores. Applications without GRE test scores will still be considered but applicants (if awarded the scholarship), will have to satisfy the GRE requirement prior to them embarking on their PhD studies.
Coverage+
Successful candidates will be given support for up to 5 years of PhD studies.
Successful candidates will receive:
-Full tuition fees, annual book & conference allowance
-Monthly sustenance allowance
-Monthly overseas allowance
-Annual return airfare
-Computer allowance
-Warm clothing and settling-in allowance
-Thesis allowance
+All rates/allowances vary according to country and university, and are subjected to adjustments by A*STAR from time to time.
Service Commitment
Upon completion, candidates will return to contribute to A*STAR research institutes in Singapore for 4 years.

A*STAR accepts and processes NSS(PhD) applications throughout the year. However, priority will be given to applications that reach us by 1st April for admission to the overseas university in fall the following year.
